All singing & dancing

You could not go half an hour at any one of our SYD sessions when you wouldn't see our kids spontaneously break out in song and dance at some point. Just wouldn't happen!

Throughout Our age groups....

The joy of singing and dancing is something we relish at SYD.

From whatever age your child joins us, we will be encouraging and offering plenty of opportunities to participate in and have a go at singing and dancing activities in all it's forms.

These could include learning simple choreography to compliment a singing performance at our Christmas Carol show, or a full-blown musical theatre ensemble piece, every effort to support and encourage the children to get involved and have a go is given.

Singing.............

We don't believe that there is any such thing as a 'bad singer'!

We think there is however such a thing as children who think they 'can't sing' as they have assessed themselves based on a pop song, or someone has told them they do not have a 'good singing voice', at often an early age.

So they believe that person and quite often the 'knowledge' that they cannot sing will stay with them throughout the rest of their lifetime, and their only joyful experience of singing would be to themselves in the shower, or the car on their own.  I wonder how many of us can relate to that scenario.

Remember that feeling though, the one of pure exhilaration at blasting out your favourite song at the top of your voice in the sure knowledge that you are on your own, that no one else is listening to you and you are not being judged.

Well we don't accept that children cannot sing, and with a bit of encouragement, a bit of training and most importantly of all, a bit of confidence, we can bring out the joy of singing in a child that will stay with them forever.

Taking part in a choir is fun and exhilarating and can give a child a discipline and grounding of unimaginable benefit to them.

Throughout your child's' time at SYD we will nurture any particular singing talent they may show with a good grasp of basic technique and skills, opportunities to learn a diverse range of music and participate in many performance opportunities.

The performance of a song is considered to be more than just voice and these performing skills can be honed and trained to the highest standards, dependent on the enthusiasm and work ethic of the student.

Older students showing a lot of talent and interest in singing are given opportunities to perform and gain experience outwith of SYD productions and events.

Whatever perception of talent for singing, every child is given the opportunity and encouragement to shine.

Dancing........

Guess what? we don't believe that a child cannot dance either.

Some children feel themselves entirely relaxed moving their bodies to music that they can feel the beat to, without a learnt 'dance step' or any proper training, they just seem to be 'born to dance'!

Other children, whom actually fall into the majority, think they can't dance as they didn't go to ballet school, or missed the hip hop class on TV that day.

The truth is we are all victims of thinking we shouldn't do things unless it's perfect or we are the best at it, and unfortunately lots of children pick-up on these messages and start to become embarrassed and self-conscience in front of others if they think they are not great.

We don't believe everyone can be great at everything, but we absolutely believe that everyone can experience the fun and joy that dancing can make you feel.

To be able to stretch and move your bodies in certain ways and into shapes, to follow choreography however simple and learn some basic dance techniques are all something we teach and encourage each child to participate in.

If they can let themselves go and be in the dance, imagine the confidence and self-esteem it can give them when acting and the courage to perform it, bringing all these skills into their everyday.

Most of our dance included in our sessions are age appropriate and achievable projects which we include in musical theatre productions, pop music video shoots or just to warm up our bodies and have a lot of fun.

Children showing particular talent and enthusiasm are offered extra performance opportunities if they have a proven work-ethic, but all children are given the chance to fly!!
