Film Club
There is so much you can do with film making it's mind boggling. The possibilities and opportunities are endless and the most exciting thing when you see the enjoyment and creativity that making film can inspire. Sheena xx
Five years ago we where lucky enough to be granted funding from a 'Cashback for Communities' grant from 'Awards for All'. We had long yearned for the opportunity of being able to offer our SYD members the chance to add 'Film' to their range of artistic outlets and so were delighted to spend this grant money on a modern camera.

We had by then a couple of films that had been shot on various home movie video recorders and phones, but with the purchase of this new equipment, and the subsequent additions of other essential gear we have thrown ourselves into the medium of film making in a much bigger way.

Summer School each year has been an amazing opportunity for children and volunteers alike to really get their teeth into a film project, from conception right through to post production, we now write, plan, film and edit a mini-film in collaboration with our SYD members and visitors for the week of filming and now have five films in the can.

Along with Summer Film School, we have been asked to many events and occasions where we have made recordings of these memories and have been excited to do so as it has given us a lot of valuable experience and a huge amount of fun.

It has been a request from several of our students that we attempt a filmmaking session on a more regular weekly or bi-weekly basis, to really start to get to grips with the skills needed to make a movie. It is a fascinating medium and offers an abundance of opportunities to learn so many transferable skills and have a lot of fun.

This would be a regular session where the emphasis to the student would be all about them grabbing a camera, plugging in a mic and going off to use them.

As the students skills and confidence grow in the technical use of the equipment, we can explore the different techniques used to achieve the desired 'look' of the film, how to add music, edit and present their films to an audience. We will be trying out animation and looking at how to make 'you tube' and 'vimeo' shorts, we even have drones to experiment with.

We would study the different roles of the crew on a film set and we would have experience of each of them from 'Best Boy' to Director, learning that each role is important and vital to a film production.

We would collaborate on writing film scripts, planning every stage from locations to transport, to sound and lighting engineering to even SFX!, everyone gets a shot !!

The club can grow and expand as much as it's members want to, the possibilities and level of enjoyment are endless, as is the creativity that can come out of this project and in this world of digital media, not a small range of skills to have in your arsenal.

If you are already a SYD member and attend one of the other drama sessions then this new filmmaker club will compliment what you are already achieving but at the same time be something very different.

The sessions will cover specifically acting for camera, plus all the other drama related skills like makeup and hair design, costumes and set designing that you will have some experience of at some point within your theatre training, but with the angle of film production which can be quite different.
However, the greatest emphasis of the filmmaking club will be behind the camera and boom making cinematic art from nothing.

If you are not a current member of SYD, or acting is not your thing, but enjoy technical subjects and you like the sound of creating innovative and interesting visuals then this film club could be for you. Once we are up and running we will be offering taster sessions to let you try it out.

We are presently trying to gauge the interest in these sessions and cannot yet publish times and dates.

It would be enormously helpful if you could get in touch to register your interest in film school and also let us know preferable weeknights/weekend days and times that would work as a preference. Thank you xx
